    12AX7 / ECC83 advice sought

Indeed Werner- the very same amplifier. I have had the amp playing all day and the sound seems better. Maybe the Raytheon tubes needed to warm up again. The top end seems to be cleaner and more defined than when I first installed them. They were used for a few months before I bought the Gold...

    12AX7 / ECC83 advice sought

So gain on 12AX7 is around 100x Gain on 5751 is around 70x. Thank you. My volume knob gets to 2.00pm on phono currently. Short of steam. Versus plenty loud at 10.00am from the Gustard DAC - specs say 3 volt max from there. I’m looking for a replacement phono pre currently. With above 40dB...

    12AX7 / ECC83 advice sought

Morning I’m looking for tube recommendations. Over the weekend I detected some distortion on one channel of my Jolida hybrid amplifier. It has two 12AX7 / ECC83 tubes. I have replaced both tubes with Raytheon NOS (stamped made in Japan) that were kindly supplied by Tonetubes- who have many...

    Hobbies besides Hi Fi

Wine making - garagiste approach. Maybe 20 cases of red per annum for consumption with friends. Running the odd road race. Buying records, CDs and books on music. Mostly used. Detective novels also consume a good chunk of time.

    Ariston RD11 Superieur revival

I rebuilt an Ariston RD40. It came without an arm so I purchased a new arm - Origin Live Onyx, from Audio Exchange. It’s adjustable iro of height so VTA can be optimised. I’m very happy with it. I needed a new fitting plate for the arm as it’s geometry was not the same as those supplied by the...

    Digital upgrade

So far DAC only. CD and also my stand alone streamer. I need to connect this DAC to my router. Which I will do soon. Also then connect to the Apple lossless universe. My streamer has more options but I don’t want to sign up to more subscriptions at this time. I’m enjoying the sound so far...

    Digital upgrade

I have an R26. You can adjust the voltage settings- yes there are two of them and you need to set them to the highest voltage. Not sure if it’s 220 or 230. You will be fine with an R26.

2023 - Music & Audio Highs and lows

My low a flood at the end of September. A river rose past the previous 100 year high water mark. And having to rescue some of my jazz CDs. Flood water and mud wrecked the covers and inserts. I managed to wash some and dissolve the sludge off. Only 2 so far won’t play. Highs. My wonderful...

    Audio hell

Well once the mud dries we start stripping out built in cupboards. The mud underneath is rank. Then replace cupboards and then re establish the audio set ups. Between my stereo, DSTV and satellite setup there’s about 10 different Wall wart power supplies. I need two iFi units iPowerX - for...

    Audio hell

Our next door neighbour’s house. Insurance advised us worse than Franschhoek. Us and neighbors are only two houses in street of close to twenty that didn’t lose cars. Never saw this in CT Southern Suburbs!

    Audio hell

We’ve had to measure water ingress height above floor level for insurers. Close enough to 900mm in our case. Although it surged past our house. Higher than 900 apparently on one side. I guess it may have been blockage released upstream causing a surge. Luckily we live in an amazingly generous...

My hifi cupboard after the flood. Got most of it out as the waters rose. 300 soggy CDs. Luckily amp and DAC rescued. Turntables were on top shelf. Cables got wet. Last week I was at CT expo planning to buy a DAC or phono pre. Not for a while! Wine bottles survived luckily!

Cape Town Audio Expo 15-17 September

I am so glad that I attended this event. It was superbly organised and the organisers need our congratulations- job well done. The exhibitors were patient and informative - everyone that I spoke with. And some superb sounding kit. The local equipment was superb too. Well done to all...

Does your family, loved ones and close friends get your passion for hifi, sound and music?

Choice is what to spend next available funds on. Music or kit. So why spend money on music (LPs and CDs) when streaming is available? And my streamer can sound good. I like the tangible ownership of music- LPs and CDs. And they often sound great. Equipment is expensive and I can’t yet afford...

How many panels - question for experienced users

The optimal solution is to face the panels directly at the sun. Realistically the offset angles between summer and winter appear to be more than 20 degrees of angle. Based on a quick look at various websites dealing with solar direction of light. The basic maths of a degree variation- using...
