    4,8,16 Ohm Speaker Taps

Hi Whats the reason for the multiple speaker taps for 4, 8, 16Ohm speakers? Can you do damage using a 4ohm speaker on the 8ohm taps, just wondering cause a 4 ohm speaker needs more current than a say an 8 ohm speaker to drive, what effect does that have on the electronics? I read somewhere...

    Just blown away

Not too close to the power tubes, on the underside, closer to the power transformer in the front. Perhaps 105 Degree caps weren't available in 1982?

interesting fdlsys... I was only aware of Premier One and Premier One B which had different output valves. Was it the One B that had the Premier One on the front?

    Just blown away

She's gonna be a bit high maintenance in the next year... lol. Just looking at the cap replacement, looks to be costly. Mouser has exact replacements by Vishay Sprague, need 4x 3300uF 350V which they have 9 of, found them elsewhere at $90 each for exact replacement on ebay, but not sure I trust...

    Just blown away

Hi After battling with a loudish hum in both channels, had a look under the bonnet and found some bad caps which was to be expected for the age of the amp, but alas, replaced these bad caps and its much happier These were the worst ones Hooked up, crossed fingers and hoped I didn't blow up...

Greetings from a guitar amp enthusiast

Hi Shaun Welcome! Just getting into valves myself, going to be an interesting journey.. Don't suppose you found some 6550, 6922 or 6FQ7/6CG7's? Was there perhaps a valve tester amongst the electronic equipment ?

    Magneplanar 1.7

Hi I bought a pair of Electromotions from Kreativ Audio, speak to Philip, 011 450 1512 / 082 441 0353. He still has a pair in the shop. Listened to B&W CM9's, still went for the Electromotions, something special about electrostats. Build quality on B&W are exceptional. Happy speaker hunting..

New Speakers - DIY or not

Thanks guys. I don't think I'd be interested in a DIY electrostat though, thanks for the suggestion. I think if I decide to stay with electrostat, i'm gonna stick to whatever is current in the ML line, probably save for a longer period. Just cant get my head around the look of DIY electrostats...

New Speakers - DIY or not

Hi I hungry to replace an existing pair of ML Aerius i's that I've had for a long time, I think the panels are in need of replacement now. I've listened to a pair of Electromotions and a briefly to a pair of B&W CM9's and I'm curious as to what DIY speaker combo would be in the ballpark as...

Getting started with vinyl... yet another one

Lol... not much more in my dad's garage in terms of good sounding stuff. I was gobsmacked when I did a bit of reading on what I found. Somewhere in there there's an old Mcintosh MC2105 amp and a C20 preamp, that's a project for another time  :) So it looks like I'll be reviving the TTS-3000 and...

Getting started with vinyl... yet another one

Hi Since these black Frisbees seem to be more readily available, i'm keen to give it a try. I'm busy getting all the bits together, looked in my dads garage and discovered an old dusty Sony TTS-3000 turntable with a SME 3012 SII tonearm.  I've also uncovered a new still boxed Linn LP12...

    Skullcandy Aviator

Hi Skullcandy?? blah... I would have never thought I'd buy a pair of Skullcandy's, but a recent special came up and I got them much cheaper than you would in the stores. Before buying them, I did manage to have a listen to them at the HP store in Sandton City through my phone, I thought they...

    Head-Fi Journey

Hi Wolla Yip, DIY headphone amp by AMB Laboratories. 3-channels, Left channel, Right channel and Ground channel. There is some heated debate about the virtual ground channel. Since according to AMB, the 3-channel amp was the recommended build for 3-wire headphones, that what I've followed...

    Is EQ cheating?

Hi While I love the HD-800's and how they perform brilliantly with well recorded music in certain genres, its annoying that its really unforgiving on badly recorded music. For that type of music, I prefer to add a bit of EQ, a little more bass, a little less treble and I'm still very happy. I...
