Re: Links for newcomers to home cinema

mmm.  Most of my knowledge (very little) is in stereo equipment - so this will come in handy. Can you get decent recievers for reasonable amounts (ie.  Under R15K)?  Because I will in the end hook that up to the multiple Marantz monoblocks rather than buy a single 6 channel amp.

    Review : JVC RX5032 V Reciever

Its the room where I listen to most of my music in, so I can believe it. tptb  <---- trying to justify the electronics that also sit in his bedroom.

Buying used B&W speakers - warranty and other considerations?

Never noticed.  Not really worried.  Bought from HFX and there service is brilliant.

    B&W 800 series DVD

And a nice room to run them in.  I think when the time comes to fiddle with the big system 801's are the answer.

DVD Music - Good Quality Recordings

Usually Ms Krall's CD's/DVD's/SACD's are well mastered/produced.  Helps that I like her music though.

Misconceptions in the SA general public regarding Home Cinema

Never seen one for less than R250.  So expensive.

Speakers available in SA - What you've got or what you want

Probably the case.  I dont like the 604's (find them slow and bloated), but the rest of the 600 range is very good.  A friend hooked his 601's up to his lounge system (Levison, Proceed etc) and they were remarkably good for what they are. The 70X's are not speakers that I like at all. Love the...

    Sexy new Denon kit

Doesnt make it right though.  As much as I love my MP3 player in the car, its simply due to the fact that as you cant get good sound in a car, and thus I can rather just have lots of music to annoy other passengers with!

Speakers available in SA - What you've got or what you want

mmm, my views on Wharfedale are well known to Kay. Have listened to the 309's today and was quite impressed.  Why dont you rather look at the 603's, they are not that much more expensive and much better.  Infact just bought a set today. Also in comment to Greg_M with the LM1's - they are...

Oh - the system in the bar has a Sansui amp.  Actually works quite nicely if not the last word in control. (Rotel 865 used as transport/Theta Progeny DAC/said sansui amp/B&W LM1's/dont even ask me what cables and interconnects but they are not good)

    Sexy new Denon kit

Oh, and its got I-Pod connectivity so you can listen to really low quality MP3's.   Oops. must try and keep sarcasm under controll.

I am Andrew.  Live in Gauteng, was informed of this site by Kay, who ever so often uses his real name and confuses me. I have various items including Krell, Theta, B&W, Aura, Marantz, Rotel, Infinity and the cheapest and nastiest LG HT system you would ever not want to hear. Anything else?

Do you believe in cable run-in?

Ah.  Will not try that at home if you dont minf kay.

Do you believe in cable run-in?

Having never changed cables when not changing speakers I really cant comment on this, appart from the fact that I agree that it can happen. Even items like amps change in sound as the capacitors etc age.
