    Value for money speaker cable

Turns out Aberdere have stopped making the product anyway  :-\

Hiding Cables on Walls - Clever tricks?

Not sure if this should be under 'Cables' or 'Room Treatment' - please forgive me if I have it wrong (suppose the Mods will move if so?) Looking to run some speaker cables down from the ceiling along the walls (mostly in the corners). I'm trying to avoid chasing into the wall and putting...

    Why don't TV boxes last?

OP: I think you might want to check other environmental or usage variables - I have 3 Chromecasts and 2 android TV boxes (one of which is so 'old' now that the tech doesn't work with alot of new stuff now) and all of them are still fine. The Chromecasts get used a fair amount too, since I use...

    Testing speakers before selling

FWIW, having satisfied yourself the speakers are running satisfactorily (as already outlined), I would leave it hooked up so that the buyer can see it all running so there are no surprises for them or you.

    Marketing People and Misleading Specs

Nice to hear of someone that has some done things in a way that doesn't appear to be a touch underhanded. This got me to looking at few others. Denon also lead with massive power values against 1 channel at stupid THD values, but directly underneath state values against values against 0.08%...

    Marketing People and Misleading Specs

Hmmmm - looked at their more up market stuff - seems getting an honest value off their web pages is not unique to the lower prices items. Having said that if you download their manuals, on the last few pages under general specification they state the RMS power for 2 channels driven at 0.08%...

    Marketing People and Misleading Specs

This seems to be a more recent trend on how entry level amps are specced: As an example since I just got one: Onkyo HT-R495 (Same, it appears, as TX-SR494 but from an all in one kit with speakers etc): Power output (Front L/R / Center / Surround L/R / Height L/R): 160 W/Ch (6 Ω, 1 kHz, 10%...

    Value for money speaker cable

Thanks for the feedback. I was similarly inclined in thinking and since my last post, I spent a bit of time doing some homework: Seems Aberdere make a 'rip cord' intended for, among other things, speaker use. They publish a bit of data on it stating resistance is 7.98 Ω/km (or 0.00798 Ω/m - say...

    Value for money speaker cable

Also on the search for a better cable for exactly the same unit. Rears in my case will be about a 10 or 11 m run each. Unlike the OP, where R100/m is OK, spending half the price of the this entry level set on cables doesn't make much sense. Especially when acoustically, the room I intend using...

SD cards for Digital Audio Player (DAP) is it mission critical?

Ditto on above - data rate for audio is small compared to video - even for most slow modern cards not an issue. Just get form a reputable supplier, so you don't get a fake 'sandisk' and you are good to go

    60kW Powerwall build

Quite an original way to get a meaningful battery bank. And nice and flat against the wall is a winner too

Hi-Fi Club Zoom meeting on Wednesday 8th July

I'm relatively new here (and JHB based). How often do you have these meetings?

    Trusted Repairer/Tweaker database

Sorry, should qualify that with looking to get a Marantz PM44SE sorted (I did note Roland worked for HFX previously)

    Trusted Repairer/Tweaker database

So the 2 names I see pop up here with multiple positive responses about for Amp repair in the JHB areas are Nilam Naran and Roland Vlok. Any others I should be considering speaking to?

    Damping panels

Another thought - while cosmetically pleasing, the wood surrounds are another 'reflective' surface - not as bad as the probably plastered surface it is likely in front of, but not as good as if the whole frame had being covered.

    Damping panels

I'm not in the audio acoustic damping for audio applications, but fibreglass, rockwool are the gotos for many folks in industrial sound insulation - a lot cheaper than towels, and I would have thought significantly more effective, but in the absence of data, who knows...

Best Soundbars in the R5k range?

Seeing the comments herein and a bit of googling - seems the Vizio line is well though of - curious that no-one is selling them here

Suggested budget stereo Amp {or 5.1 if cost effective)

Thanks Resham, but already sorted - eventually settle on a Yamaha amp - not quite the spec of your amp, but adequate for needs and within my limited budget

Suggested budget stereo Amp {or 5.1 if cost effective)

Further to the above, funny how things work - I posted originally on 12 Jan and after whole week of no-one replying, I actually took the plunge and bought the Denon baby AVR-X250bt, only to find response from you both this morning As observed, by Hi-Phibian, the entry level Denon is not...

Suggested budget stereo Amp {or 5.1 if cost effective)

Thanks for the feedback guys. The PM44SE is a nice amp and if it still was 100%, I definitely wouldn't be bothering with a new one. Reef: I've looked periodically for another amp in the price range I suggested - very little pops up that is reasonably recent (I want to avoid amps that are many...
