    NAD vs Rotel Amps

I had both.  Rotel was more transparent by a long shot.  And it is built better.  Unless you go to the very top NADs that are stupid money.

Hi-fi Seperates: Pre Vs Power Amplifiers

Definitely pre, UNLESS I have a power amp that is not able to drive the speakers properly.  I big mistake people used to make in the past was to think that your amp has to have less power capability than the speakers, and that if the amp had more, it would blow the speakers.  Well, the reverse...

I am in the mood for another epic speaker build

I have tried this before and no matter how careful you are, you always get one edge not lining up, which you always notice after the glue has set.  Things are too hectic at glue-up time.  Always better to have it slightly larger by a whisker and then to get it right afterwards.  I prefer not...

Hi-fi Seperates: Pre Vs Power Amplifiers

The pre-amplifier sections of most AVRs are seriously compromised.  There is just too much stuff in a small space.  I get clear crosstalk between channels on my AVR, and it is supposed to be a quite good AVR.  (Harman Kardon AVR5000).

    Hello Claro

Yes, at this stage I am not even looking at them, though the Helicon 800 Mark 2 might be an interesting step down.  BUT, I would prefer to support Roy.

    Hello Claro

This is actually what I am trying to say.  They have good fast base punch, but I expected them to go lower, especially with that size cabinet and the Vifa 8 inch driver.  The Pleiades are the best surrounds I have ever heard though.

Hi-fi Seperates: Pre Vs Power Amplifiers

Don't agree with this at all.  Good speakers will sound worse with poor amps and source as they will tend to show the problems, where poor speakers will mask the problems.

    Hello Claro

I have a sinking feeling that Roy will probably ask around R35k for these.  :vsad: I have the earlier square box Vegas, Polaris center and Pleiades surrounds.  Roy builds a lot of studios, so his speakers tend to sound a lot like studio monitors also, meaning that they can sometimes sound a bit...

I am in the mood for another epic speaker build

Excellent work there Ian.  You work way too hard man.  I never really liked Meranti.  Grain too coarse for my liking.  I prefer Beech, although a wee bit expensive.

    Rotel Service Agents

This should be easy (usually).  Most of these transformers has 2 110V primaries wired up in parallel for a 110V/115V feed and in series for a 220V/230V feed.

    Genelex Golden Lion E88CC/6922

Thought that it would not be your favourite Rudi, it being more neutral compared to the others from JJ and Genelex Gold Lion (New Sensor/Reflektor).  The EV is even better.  I would like to get hold of a set sometime.  Pity we don't have someone in SA that imports directly from Russia here local...

Ja, so much so that they are constantly sold out, especially the EV variants.

    Genelex Golden Lion E88CC/6922

I wonder how this new Genelex E88CC compares with the Voskhod 6n23p-ev?  Although the 6n23p-ev is a difficult valve to get a hold of, it seems to be a very rugged and good sounding 6922 equivalent. These Genelex valves are eina expensive.  When I bought some 6922 types I could only afford the...

What is going on in Maseru today?

Typical African politics.  It's all about using violence and dirty tactics to get into power, and then enriching themselves through corruption once they are in power.

Windows Virtual Memory too Low Warning

Skollie Ja, Windows is a bit useless in that way.  It by default uses your C drive as a swap space for virtual memory.  If physical memory is low it swaps out data in memory to your swap space.  The more programs in memory, the more swap space it will use.  But if you use too much of your C...

    Audio Research LS5 MKIII

Frans To me it looks like they used Q9 in a cascode to carry some of the voltage.  I am no expert,  but I don't think it will hurt to experiment with some JFETs.  Just need to determine how much voltage that Q9 drops to find some candidates for Q8 and Q10. Waar is Rudi en sy maatjies?  Dalk...
