Chris: It does sound like incompatibility but the AVR is fully updated, being a slightly older model (X4200w) and the Sony has been working on this AVR until recently. I will give a further update in more recent responses, below.

The LG DVD player worked with PCM output so I set the Sony on PCM in order to have matching conditions. In any event, I did try Bitstream, to no avail.
