    How much do cables matter?

Eddie's dad applied percussive maintenance. It worked with valve radios, generally old electronic equipment and children with equal effect- some responded positively and others didn't.

NAD CD Player disc insert problem

Thanks for your ideas, Frankenfurter but the loading tray in this NAD does not operate in the manner you think. Obviously I have opened the player and inspected it and thereby established the culpability of the wiring harness I referred to. It leads to two direct drive motors, one for opening...

NAD CD Player disc insert problem

I think I found the source of the problem but need a specific wiring harness to repair it. This is a part only obtainable from a NAD repair specialist or dealer. Any help re finding a NAD workshop/ technician would be really appreciated.

NAD CD Player disc insert problem

Hello everyone, I'm looking for guidance please. I have a NAD CD player, model BEE 546. Good old faithful player for years but now it is acting up. When I insert a CD, it ejects without reading it. If I do this quite a few times, it then accepts the disc and plays without further problems. I've...

    Design and application disconnect

Many moons ago, when I was young and curious, I made a stereo recording with a good quality Philips tape deck with matching speakers. Recording was of a friend playing a flamenco guitar in his lounge. The playback in the same room was uncanny. It sounded just like the real thing he had done a...

TV - TCL or HiSense or Skyworth

In every store selling TV sets I have been in, the Skyworth sets always, without fail, had the poorest image quality. Maybe it is the way they were set up but then why set them up badly if you want to sell them?

Help needed with Blu ray player

Kenmasters: Your advice is always wise, dare I say in this case, sound as well? The Sony player only has one HDMI output and is a regular Blu-ray player. As far as I can make out, no changes occured to the TV settings and the AVR has always been on a standard input setting.

Help needed with Blu ray player

Steve: I read your report from 2020 with a major sense of deja vu! Anyway, I can now report that the Sony and Denon AVR are, once again, cooperating. So, what did I do? Nothing, yes folks, nothing. I switched everything off at the wall, as I usually do when I shut down at night. Next morning...

Help needed with Blu ray player

Chris: It does sound like incompatibility but the AVR is fully updated, being a slightly older model (X4200w) and the Sony has been working on this AVR until recently. I will give a further update in more recent responses, below.

Help needed with Blu ray player

The LG DVD player worked with PCM output so I set the Sony on PCM in order to have matching conditions. In any event, I did try Bitstream, to no avail.

Help needed with Blu ray player

Hello, I'm appealing to all the Sherlock Holmes' of the audio world for help with the following problem. I have two disc players, a LG DVD player and a Sony Blu Ray player. The Sony recently stopped sending audio via it's HDMI output. Video signal is OK. IOW, it apparently only sends out only...

Thanks for explaining what you meant by noise in cables. You generated valuable discussion from experienced members, which is always worthwhile.

    Small Amplifiers for Floorstanding Speakers

Whoa, hold up there a minute: THD of 10%?. That is terrible. You'll be listening to distortion, not the music. Real hifi standards aim for THD of 0.1% or close to that.

    Small Amplifiers for Floorstanding Speakers

Some speakers absorb quite a lot of power, others are very sensitive. For example, a lot of Klipsch speakers are claimed to work well with low power amps. What appears to matter is the stated sensitivity of the loudspeaker. You should look for models that have a stated sensitivity of 87db or...

    How much do cables matter?

I would appreciate an explanation of what you mean by 'self noise'. A cable is passive. Trying very hard to hear my cables make a noise but whenever I try, they stay 'tjoepstil'. Which pleases me as I like my cables to be well behaved in company.

    55" TV's - worth spending more?

The advice re viewing distance is good. I have the Samsung 55 inch screen and it is a perfect size for a 4 meter long room. The sound from the built in speakers is way better than expected. My only complaint is the over saturated green, typical of Samsung TVs. It is artificially saturated and...

    Will AI help our hobby?

The focus in the replies thus far leave out the expected benefits from digital processing of music to improve the sound. Just as in modern photography, where AI can and has improved photo images by enhancing clarity, contrast and reducing inherent noise, so can AI improve music by automatically...
