Ideas, opinions and guidance sought re upgrading a CD player

Esteemed members of AVforum, I would greatly appreciate your expert input re the following idea: I want to upgrade the sound from my CD player, a NAD 546 BEE. It is a good quality player but I know that there are better players on the market, the Marantz 6007, for example, which is in my price...

    The perfect earth

Well done Ecki, that is a great experiment. The addition of salt to the ground means that your copper grid will form a surface layer of Cupric Chloride over time. Give it four months and let us know what the ohms reading is at that stage. I find it fascinating that a small reduction in earth...

Which of these speakers should be used

Unless you put in carpets, curtains and some sound reflection absorbing furnishings, it wont matter which speakers you use, the sound you will get will be way below optimal. But for what is is worth, I would use the 10.6's. They will take up as much room as the 10.1's on stands and save you the...

Phantom centre vs (compromised) true centre

The key benefit, in my experience, of a real center speaker (in a surround sound system), is that you gain better clarity over dialogue, which is often murky due to bad sound tracks on a lot of movies. You also can adjust dialogue volume separately from the stereo and surround channels and can...

Home Cinema Speaker Search Over! (M&K S150 "Mini Review")

How would you rate the M and K speakers for music? Could one use these as general purpose speakers for both music and HT?

I suggest you wear a mask in the future, just in case.

The impact of a sound/response curve on how you perceive music

That is an extremely useful graph towards understanding why some music sounds the way it does. Thanks so much.

    Perspex boxes for equipment

Thanks for sharing your funny story; I too learned the hard way that there are some plastics that epoxy does not stick to, in my case, pvc piping. I then read the fine print of the instructions to learn what i had already dicovered. Lesson 1: always read the instructions before use!

    Unknown Disc

Sorry, looks like you wont get a new Sony player in RSA. Sony seems to have gapped it. The rule of thumb i was taught regarding repairs is to repair up to 50% of the value of whatever is being repaired. Beyond that point, scrap or sell for spares.

    Unknown Disc

You said it was new so how come you have to pay for a repair? But in the event that you have no recourse, spend less on a different brand. E.g. Sony made some well rated BD players.

Recommend a set of book shelves

Surprised no one has suggested Kef R3's or Kef LS50 Meta. Also consider Sonor Audio Claro 6.1. This is a floorstander with a footprint no bigger than a stand, front firing ports and the speakers located at earlevel when sitting down. Takes up as much space as some bookshelves on stands.

    Sonor audio Claro 6.1

Thanks for the feedback, Franzar. Very useful to confirm the bright nature of these speakers. I have taken to setting these pointing straight-ahead, no toe-in. This has worked effectively in my small listening room in reducing the sharpness on some treble notes. The speakers are about 2.4 meters...

    Sonor audio Claro 6.1

Sources = NAD CD player, C545, cheap media player via hdmi, Flac files, TV 5.1/stereo audio. I have a feeling that the Claro's will do better with valve amplification and am looking for user experience to confirm/disconfirm.

    Sonor audio Claro 6.1

Good day everyone, I have S A Claro 6.1's playing on a Denon X4200 AVR. I find certain treble sounds e.g. close miked treble notes on a piano to be uncomfortably piercing. The speakers are excellent for imaging and microdynamics but seem to lack upper bass/lower mid body when played on the...

    Audio problem with Samsung TV

Drifter, thanks for the tips. Yes, every check has been done. The problem remains. My neighbour is likely to 'dump' the problem TV and get a new one at some point. Being a 5 year old TV, he will significantly upgrade his viewing experience.

    Perception influencing appreciation of music

Music can enter the brain through two pathways - auditory and visual. Two is better than one. Watching a performance as opposed to merely listening to it should always be a fuller experience, with the exception of watching those classical pianists who contort their faces in the agony and ecstasy...

    Audio problem with Samsung TV

Hi, I'm hoping that someone could give me some tips as to what might be the problem: I took a DVD player around to a neighbour and hooked it up via HDMI to his 5 year old Samsung smart TV - regrettably I don't know the model number and neither does he - the screen is attached to the wall. Well...

    Dynamic range with classical music

You might be onto something with your observation but I've had different amps and different speakers in the past, including ones with larger cones but the same problem has persisted across the years.
