I have since hooked it up to a Little Bear 2-1 headphone tube amp and I am absolutely smitten.  My uDSD is nice on its own, but nothing beats the warmth and smoothness of tube.  I'm actually runnoing the uDSD and Little Bear in tandem and getting the best of both. I read the Golden Ears review...

I have started looking into open backs headphones and not really having much experience of headphones and never having heard open backs;  I took a cheap shot at the Philips SHP 9500's off ebay. They've received quite good reviews and one quite funny one...

Yes RCA's and digital out connected via the rear.  Its just a wooden block with a rectangular cavity all the way through, lined with stick-on felt to hold the uDSD firmly.  Got mine just over a week ago from Joel and I'm sure he's got more

.. was expecting comment on the old Pioneer headphones, but suspect many may have thought it to be a relic....  I retrofitted it some time ago with AKG studio drivers and it is actually very pleasant - great mids and even tops, without the bass fatigue associated with some headphones....

I am so impressed with my new little uDSD and while it is meant to be a portable device, using it as a headphone amp at home, has one downside - its so small and light that you end up pulling on the interconnects every time you pick it up and adjusting the volume is a bit of a fiddly affair.  So...

MMnnn - a little giant slayer preamp/dac could be interesting - especially if it has phono inputs as well ( I know, I'm not asking for much....)

MMnnn - WAF barriers there, but I've made some changes in speaker positioning and it made a big difference.  Can try some acoustic panelling behind (aesthetic challenges...?)

Thanks for all the input.  I doubt its the DAC that's the problem - when I play a cd via direct analogue input (not through the DAC), I get much the same sound, which makes me suspect that it may be the Aragon preamp.  But having said that, I've tested the Aragon on my boet's setup with a Quad...
