The yellow/purple wires are the 6.3 volts AC going directly from the transformer to the heating filaments, no filtering etc. All the extra wires are from the various transformers & choke, coming in through the chassis.

Build Your Own Tube Amplifier - workshop in 2011

As the guy that built the amp under Karel's watchful eye I can only say that I learned a whole lot. I won't go designing amps just yet as there are huge gaps in my understanding, but I do think I have a much better feeling overall. Thanks for the opportunity Karel! The amp is playing...

    Want to buy new Telly

One last thing - standard TV looks really bad on a big screen!  To appreciate HD you'll need an HD source. That means Blu Ray or HD media player with high quality MKV files. I'm not sure because I don't have "satellite" but I think DSTV has only a few HD channels?  And are they even full 1080p?

    Want to buy new Telly

I found a Panasonic 42" HD Ready Plasma that was on sale at under R8000 (Audio Vision Canal Walk) . With the threat of being flamed - it really looked good and I quite believed the sales person that you can't see the diff between HD ready & HD at 42".    Even at 50" it's not easy.  OK so you're...

    Want to buy new Telly

I think it has a lot to do with which generation or "series" you're looking at. I compared (in a Ster shop) a Samsung 42" LCD with a Telefunken 42" Plasma side by side, and the LCD was better in every way, including motion blur and colour. The Telefunken only cost R7000, and my personal...

    Want to buy new Telly

I also took a plunge and bought a 50" Samsung Plasma full HD. Got it for a steal at R10 000. I did a very quick tour of shops and stats. (Because I bought a media player and it came pre-loaded with lots of HD stuff, and suddenly I didn't want to watch them on 74cm roundscreen). In my very brief...

    touching of valves

Hello, Does one need to be careful with handling valves similar to handling halogen light bulbs? Not touch with bare hands because oily residue can cause localised hot spots and crack the glass? Wipe with alcohol in case of accidental contact? Can you put stickers or something on the glass...

    New Mede8er range

Yes yes, have so many things to do...  It's kinda on my list but I'm quite happy with the look & feel of the AC Ryan so it's not a pressing matter. A friend's mede8er is lying here right now, maybe I should flash it with the (AC Ryan) upgraded firmware I downloaded but have not even had a...

    New Mede8er range

Would be owners should also look at the AC Ryan PlayOn!HD I just bought one. It is basically the same hardware as the Mede8er, different firmware. Same remote, different colour buttons, no buttons on face (apart from Power). power supply looks like a slightly cheaper design, no carry bag. The...

Using a standard PC monitor to watch movies

Hello, I have an extra PC monitor (with the normal blue plug). What's the easiest way to add a media player or something to be able to watch some kids movies on it? I know some of the cheaper no-name DVD players actually have such outputs. Then I need to add sound of some sort, PC speakers...

Build Your Own Tube Amplifier - workshop in 2011

Hi Karel, I don't understand all the options and what the impact would be (which is why I want to attend I guess!) , but if you say #5 is what you would choose, then I guess that's what I'd like. Do we all need to build exactly the same amp in the end, or are these individual choices? Regards...

Build Your Own Tube Amplifier - workshop in 2011

Feb / March is fine. I like the half day, that way it's not too much to ask of either work or family, depending on if it will be in the week or weekends. Thanks Leon

    New Mede8er range

I can't seem to find the 500x (non-light) for sale in SA anymore. Apart from the few cables and carry bag, another difference seems to be that they come with different remote controls: RC18  vs  RC91 Any one know the difference? Thanks Leon

    XBMC Media player software

Hi Fldsys, Your post comes at a time when my analysis paralysis is hitting an all time high. Too many options and ways to go about it is one of the major reasons I haven't even considered going that route. You're swaying me to the PC side (especially if I can do it on Ubuntu) Is this your...
