Who is using the hifi in the house?

I won the battle after a long journey and many attempts to win her over. I had to let go of strongly held views, though ;)

At the tail end of 2024

As most of SA slows down (I feel for those who are crazy busy during these times), I usually start to tack stock personally and professionally. The Festive season, Christmas for my family and me, is a time of having more headspace to look at my life and try to gain perspective. Often, it is a...

Who is using the hifi in the house?

I'd like to know if your family(wife/partner, kids) and friends use your main audiophile system to listen to music of their choice, regardless of the medium(vinyl, CD, or streaming). Do others use it, or is it only you? Please expand on your answer and provide context. The results and comments...

    Big acoustic problem

It is not the feelings of the architects involved for sure. Still, they should be held responsible for helping solve the problem they might have created in the first place and delivering the original problem to create a beautiful building that works well or is fit for purpose. The architect...

    Big acoustic problem

Because that is the professional thing to do, I would give the architect a say in elements such as colour, texture, etc., to maintain the integrity of the design. Possible acoustic solutions could also impact ventilation, temperature regulation, and lightning. I certainly wouldn't like to solve...

    Big acoustic problem

@Richard, no matter what you do, I suggest that the first principle to solve the problem satisfactorily is to get the original architect's involvement so that a multidisciplinary team can solve the design problem.

    Martin Logan vs Dynaudio

Darren, a year or so ago, I received feedback from a credible source that Dyanaudio and Valve Audio make a surprisingly compelling combination. I am unsure if the guy is still using this combination, but it might be worth contacting him. I will share his details with you. He tried many...

How much power to run 6 ohm speakers

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned, but distance to speakers and the size of the room are important variables. Generally speaking, if you sit close to speakers, you can get away with less power, and the same applies if your room is on the small side.

    Preferred streaming service

N=1 I think it is plausible, but take an average CD or an affordable(for most music lovers) CD player or change any variable, and the results might be different.

    Preferred streaming service

We used local files and streaming at the Expo last week, and I do so regularly at home. Streaming is on par with local files, if not better in many instances if the back-end is well considered, as @pwatts indicated. Differences probably relate more to recording differences, remastered copies...

The 2024 Global hifi show calendar

I think the Warsaw show is one of the most flourishing audio shows. Whereas Munich(now to move to Vienna) and the US CES are predominantly trade shows where the industry meets B2B, Warsaw and other similar smaller shows seem more geared toward the public at large...

    Preferred streaming service

I have used Qobuz(family account) exclusively for the past 3-4 years, also during the EXPO over the weekend. It is resource-demanding but not to the extent that one has to go overboard with computing power. In my case(at home), I use it with my old Mini Mac(2014), a Holo streamer or just...

New House Build - Listening Room Size & Tips

I agree with @Timber_MG on getting the size correct. However, from my experience, building a double brick wall with an air gap, as usual for external walls, could be helpful. It does eat away at the precious m2 but could have many upsides, including bass management and keeping the sound out of...

New House Build - Listening Room Size & Tips

Hi Francois, If possible, try stretching the dimensions a bit; aim to get close to 5mX8m. I would also focus on the room's height, which is critical. Once again, many modern buildings have a lowish ceiling height, probably around 2.6m, but I would encourage you to try and get closer to 3m. A 5m...
