Do I need a centre speaker?

Thanks. Got it sorted - switched the centre off and it works a dream on movie dialogue now. Plus a bunch of other stuff I found on the On-Screen Display. By selecting "No Sub", I also seem to have improved (enhanced) the bass in my floor standing fronts.

Do I need a centre speaker?

Okay, here's the embarrassing bit: I don't know how to access my set-up menu. It only seems to be available as an on-screen display and I can't get it to appear on my TV screen. Someone said I might need to connect my receiver to my TV via S-video (and not component video). And how do people who...

    Ha ha.

Do I need a centre speaker?

Thanks for the responses. I'll see if I can find the centre off/phantom mode this evening. As for missing the surrounds - I have an old pair of Aiwa speakers from a mini hi-fi. Nowhere near the quality worth mentioning on a forum like this. If I connect them for now as my back surrounds, will I...

Do I need a centre speaker?

Can someone, in complete layman's terms, explain to me what I need to be able to watch dvd's using my Denon 3802 and Kef Q5's? I get really good stereo quality when listening to music, but when I watch movies the dialogue seems distant and is overpowered by soundtrack and ambient audio. I...

    Sony + Kef = ?

Thanks. I reckon you're right. Only problem is the AVR 3802 user manual makes reading the original Russian text War and Peace seem like flipping through the Sunday cartoons. I'm going to have to apply my mind. The remote alone could qualify as the most technologically advanced thing I own.

    Sony + Kef = ?

Okay, I went and did the exact opposite of what I said I would. I bought an AV receiever and not a stereo amp. After much soul searching I decided I didn't want to limit my options in future. And I wanted to be able to run speakers in different rooms. And, most importantly, I got an amazing deal...

    Sony + Kef = ?

I think my mind is made up now. I'm going to go the stereo amp route. But I have one more question. I'd like to drive a second set of bookshelf speakers in an adjacent room from the same amp and cd player. Most AV receivers have a B channel for this purpose, but stereo amps seem to have just...

    Sony + Kef = ?

Once again, thanks for all the advice. Much of it is over my head, but I get the general gist. I've been looking around at stereo amps. The secondhand Nad mentioned a few posts earlier is a C320 BEE. It got fairly good reviews and, at R2500, I can just about afford it. Would it be sufficient to...

    Sony + Kef = ?

It may have grown a little in my mind, but I've just paced it off here in my office and it is certainly not less than 4.5m in width and 7 or 8m in length. I don't need to blow the neighbours away with my system. That I'll do with my drum kit. :)

    Sony + Kef = ?

Wild guess here, as I'm only moving in at the end of the month, but I'd say about 8 or 9m x 5m. Slightly higher than average ceiling and wooden floor boards.

    Sony + Kef = ?

Thanks. That is food for thought. But due to this HT "fad", the secondhand market also seems to be dominated by 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 AV receivers and quality (affordable) stereo amplifiers are few and far between. I shall certainly keep the suggestion in mind. Just two more quick questions: Does...

    Sony + Kef = ?

Wow, thanks for all the quick responses. To start with, I don't have more than R4.5 to R5k tops to lay out. So I really am talking bottom end of affordable. The reason I mentioned the Sony package and the Kef Q7's is that I've seen them advertised secondhand for what appears to be reasonable...

    Sony + Kef = ?

Hi there, New here. And also new to the whole AV business. Looking to buy a decent, but extremely affordable audio set-up that will probably be used primarily for music (predominately rock-ish stuff) but also for home theatre. I've been subjected to a pathetic little Aiwa mini hi-fi for too...
