My Linn Sondek LP12 is now 40 years old, so it is time for its first service (actually 42 years).

I bought this TT in 1977 from Hi-Fi installations Sunnyside.

Its Serial No is 2085 so it was manufactured in 1974, one of the early ones.
Here is a summary of the first 7 years of manufacturing.
1972, LP12 turntable introduced.
1974, Main bearing liner changed. Sub-chassis strengthened by addition of strap, spot welded in place. Motor control circuit changed from terminal strip to small PCB. Mains switch changed from two buttons to single with mains neon. [s/n 2,000]
1978, Top plate modified adding two holes for 6 x 0.5 self tappers into wood block. [23,000]
1979, Lid prop removed, hinges changed to spring loading. [27,000]
As I understand it, these early LP12s could be purchased as a kit without the plinth. Hi-Fi Installations mounted this ?kit? in a black Perspex plinth as can be seen in the photo and mounted a SME II tone-arm. The plinth is really flimsy, but what did I know, I was just a kid, it looked modern in 1977 and it was a demo so I got it for a good price. This is what it looked like....
This is what I handed to Dewald (ghostinthemachine) and what I got back was not my TT
.... don?t know where he got this one.... what a magician this man is. The result is amazing, the Avantgarde is very revealing and highlights the effect of all the improvements. It is now a perfect match for the rest of the system.
