I know this is far from "audiophile" quality but this is what I'm currently using to satisfy my musical needs:

LOGITECH Z-5500 SPEAKER SYSTEM
X-FI ELITE PRO PC SOUND CARD w/ EXTERNAL BREAKOUT BOX
CORE i5 HTPC

The speaker system has been modified as such:
Using 2x 60w 2-way Aiwa Bookshelf speakers (8 ohm) for Front mains L & R
Using a replacement control pod (bypass) purchased off eBay. X-Fi and Speakers are connected in analog mode and this allows my sound card with it's superior components to do all processing, and furthermore provides an amazing level of sound detail (and faster, more accurate bass) otherwise not achieved with the original Logitech pod.
Now, I know it can be argued that the original control pod has a 5.1 direct mode and I've tried this, but the difference really is night and day.
I am now looking to replace the 2 front main bookshelf speakers with decent 3-way floorstanders instead. I'm doing this so I can enjoy my flac music collection in full-range Stereo.

My question is...
What are my best options for 8 ohm floorstanders that wont set me back more than 4K a pair and will drastically boost the midrange?

I do intend upgrading to a dedicated amplifier/receiver in future but right now I'm enjoying the convenience and accessibility of my HTPC.
(PS. I'm quite happy to look at pre-owned equipment.)
