Anyone know of a foolproof USB to RS232 solution?

I need to program my TacT, but NOTHING I do lets me establish comms between the device and my laptop. I think the problem is an incompatibility between the USB to RS232 driver I am using, and the chipset in the cable.

I have tried different drivers, different cables, different COM settings, different baud rates, even different operating systems, and I am getting nowhere.

So I want to start at the beginning and find a USB to RS232 solution that works. After that I sniff the problem out further.

All advice will be welcomed.
