Hi-Fi dealers. Are they even relevant? Seems to me one now spots something that takes your fancy, fill in an online form, credit card and an upside-down , mauled box, carried by the most incredibly stupid person on earth arrives at the door.

So do we need dealers.? Remember dealers.? Rude, sniggering, barely post-teen pimply boys who would roll their eyes at you and say you need a Linn Sondek, not a whatever cable, cassette deck or toilet brush you asked for. Shops with stuff you cannot afford but lusted after, set up so badly that your Pioneer Rondo at home truly sounded better. The sniggers, the eye rolls etc. Who needs that?

Well, I do. I realised that this week. I have a Pimare AV amp I bought off this forum some time ago. It was a bargain, it was mint, it worked beautifully. Now post power failure it is dead, well almost, No HDMI, subwoofer out dead and centre channel out dead.

I also have a Schiit Jotunheim CAC (sic)/Headphone amp. Bought direct, bargain. 5 days to my door, Works nice or did. Dead or as good as after the same outage, distortion at all levels.

Of course, I took care. Whole house surge protection, delayed over sensing circuits at plugs and even a PS Audio filer before the Primare. Can?t be the mains they fiddled immediately before this then?

Here is the thing. Had I bought from a dealer, he/she would have shrugged, toot-tooted, told me it is impossible, laughed that I was an idiot but finally sent it off somewhere where it would be fixed by the supplier's tech people.  I would turn white at the bill but my unit would be fixed, till next time.

Now, I don?t know so much. Who even does Primare now? Are they going to be interested at all?  I don?t have a relationship with them, sniggering or otherwise. Hell, I don?t even know who they are or where my unit came from. And Schiit, up the creek I?d say. Sending it back to the rectum it was made in is likely to cost more than it is worth.

Bottom dweller, bargain hunters like me don?t think of this stuff when we scrounge. Organised, rule- religious ones do and they just seem to sleep so much better.

As for insurance claim, that?s another 17k a month blown on a yellow fair weather umbrella.
