It looks like my mede8er 500X2 just died on me šŸ˜

These days everything is streamed, I don't think players playing from their own hard drives is still a thing, or is it?

What do you suggest?
My needs are simple :
- want to play .MKV / MP4 / DVD & bluray image files / etc on my HD TV, via the HDMI
- want to send sound to my AV receiver via the yellow coax cable (or via the HDMI if it must, but that means I must always have the amp on even when watching a 90's sitcom)
- be able to select sound tracks, subtitles (+ set the timing thereof) etc.
- I don't need fancy library management or skins , just browsing through a file structure on the HDD is fine for me

Would those little "smart TV" boxes be able to play from a drive on my home network , or possibly plugged into it via USB?
( My TV is a bit old, it has a LAN connection and USB, which I never tried, but it's not a smart TV and I couldn't get the sound out of it in 5.1 to the amp I think, and the formats it might support might be limited)

Or are there still players on the market that can house a HDD?

Any advice on keeping it simple but functional appreciated!
