AVR in Stereo Only - which is best

i often use the Yamaha avr in pure direct for stereo. What are the opinions of the different brands and its performance in stereo only. im assuming all brands have a "pure direct" mode.

On the topic of Yamaha, has anyone upgraded to the latest Aventage range and experienced a change in performance, good or bad.
