Buying an AVR in USA 110 - 220V problem

Hi:

If I buy a good AVR in USA (Denon, Onkyo,etc), will it be a problem to use it in ZA, given the different power (110 to 220v)?
Will the use of a stepdown transformer reduce the quality of the equipment? How about overheating problems?
Any advise will be welcome.
