Carrying other peoples' passports

Is there likely to be a problem in carrying another person's passport  (who is not travelling with you) through airports / customs?

Rather than send my old passport for renewal, I want a friend to take it with when they go overseas, and hand it in personally for me.

Will customs or passport control object to that ?
