hi there
maybe this can help somebody.
I have, for the past two weeks, been using two 12 inch subwoofers in my setup. Energy S12.3 and Velodyne Impact 12. so I tried them individually first and the Energy seemed to fill the room with much more ease, i figured it may be because i am familiar with the sound of the Energy as it has been there for a couple of months, while the Velo is only 2 weeks old and may still need running etc. i then placed the velo where i had the energy and i didn't think it did any better than what my Dyno fronts were delivering. i tried running them together positioned on either side of the tv stand and a couple times i had to ensure the Velo was still on. the energy completely dominated the room.
i have since moved the energy to the right, halfway into the room, bout 3m from my sitting position. the velo is at the rear left about a metre from where i sit. the LFE level on my integra receiver is at -5, volume on the energy is at 5 (with 10 being max), volume on velo is at around 8 or 9 just so i can hear them both. when testing with a normal dolby signal from DSTV, i had to turn the velo to full max just to keep up with the energy.
the velo looks pretty with a cheap looking driver when grille is removed, with sturdy rubber feet
energy is a big square box, better left hidden on the side of a couch
be it room acoustics or positioning, the velo is just way softer but sounds more controlled and may even go slightly deeper than the energy.
although both subs will rumble when they pick up a signal, the energy seems to stay on the entire movie while the velo will, at times, only come on when the thud has already come and gone and then it will quickly switch itself off again. the velo does stay on a bit longer when playing music tho, then again, i don't use my sub when playing music.
i know there is a Paradigm PDR 12 somewhere on the classifieds, i reckon it belongs in this price bracket and i would love to sample.
volume wise i think even the energy 10 inch will outperform the impact 12.
i have now stuffed some sox into the two ports, positioned underneath the energy sub, and viola!!!!! sounds muuuuuuuch better.
energy is now discontinued and sold for around 6k brand new and the velo is current and sells for around 8k.
what have you compared? please share your findings
