A strange situation has developed with my TP-Link ADSL Modem & Router.

TP-Link  TD-W8968 Version 3.0

I got sick & tired of my previous ADSL Modem & Router (Netgear DGN2200 Version 4) as it had awful wi-fi signal strength - it barely reached to the lounge from the home office. I swapped it out for the TP-Link which had far better (stronger) wi-fi within the house.

Our ADSL line was upgraded from 10 to 20Mb late last year - it was great until mid December when we would inexplicably get "drop-outs" - still synced to the exchange, but no signal for 20 to 60 seconds at a time. Sometimes this would last longer & then, after 2 to 3 minutes I'd reboot the modem/router & all would be OK.

Various calls to Telkom, ports reset at the exchange numerous times, until Telkom then forced the line to sync at 16Mb - it was better, but the issues still occurred, just not as frequently.

Logged another fault last week & a Telkom technician came round yesterday & advised us to revert back to a 10Mb line as our SNR(??) was very bad at 6.7. Attenuation he said was very good at 24.5 (??) - this is all gibberish to me.

A quick call to Telkom & within an hour the line was downgraded to syncing at 10Mb again :(.

Alas - still the same problem with the line having 'drop-outs"! SNR at 7,2 and Attenuation at 24.0.

In desperation I swopped out the modems. Put the Netgear back into service & since around 15h00 yesterday the line has been 100% rock stable. SNR as shown on the modem is 10,4 and Attenuation is 230.

Of interest - previously when the line was at 10Mb a Speedtest on the TP-Link would show downloads at between 6 and 7,5Mb, whereas the Netgear gets between 8,6 and 9,8Mb as tested at various time this morning.

Could it be the TP-Link modem that is faulty? If so it's still under warranty & I'll swap it out.

If not & it's simply a case of some modems are better than others then I'll consider it an "education" & put it to use as a wireless access point!

Thanks in advance for your knowledge & wisdom! :)
