External access to home network

I have a small home network which includes the DVR controlling and recording from my security cameras. I can access the camera pictures and recordings using a browser on any of my computers with the DVR internal IP address. I would like to do the same, if it is secure,  from say overseas. I understand this requires enabling among other things "port forwarding" Is this not too difficult or should I gat a techie from my ISP?
