Floor Standers on a Desk ?

Hi All

Was having a discussion with a friend about sound for his place and i was wondering if you could answer his question as i am not sure on it.

The question is : Is there any reason one cannot stick floor standing speakers on top of a desk instead of using bookshelves as they will be then at a similar height to his TV.........

I could not really think of anything......is there a good reason ?
