I have always been stubbornly a fan of dedicated GPS units for driving. Garmin to be specific. Working in Roodepoort and living in Kempton my wife spends a LOT of time on the road and swears by Google maps to show the traffic and pick the best routes. She  also recently purchased a car that came with built in GPS. It is an expensive car from the stable that is notorious for not keeping the oil in the engine! So you would expect it to be good. No Sir, it is bad!

Now here is the thing. Google maps just seems superior to both of the above when using it in the city. The Garmin has been gathering dust in the cubbyhole since I had to admit defeat and agree Google Maps is better. The car GPS is not even looked at as we both consider it to be crap. It will have some novelty factor driving cross country but in the city it is useless. My sons school is in the middle of JNB (by Empire road) and Google maps always picks the best ways to get there when we have to go to the school. It has routed me through semi-dodgy areas as well so, whilst not perfect, it gets the job done better.

What is your weapon of choice when navigating the streets of your city? I swear by Google Maps now as well. Keep an eye on the classifieds soon when I decide to let my beloved Garmin go. It will be like the end of an era. Is there still room for dedicated GPS units?
