Harman/Tannoy vs Marantz/B&W? Or something else?

New to the forum, been an audiophile for a long time.

I currently have a Harman-Kardon AVR25-II with a pair of Tannoy Mercury M3 floorstanders and a Tannoy MC centre channel. I also have a HK cd player and tape deck but I'm not married to the idea of a single brand system...  ;)

My brother-in-law has decided to sell his Marantz 7.1 amp,  dvd player (don't have the model numbers unfortunately but the equipment was bought together about 8 years ago? Could be longer?) and B&W 603 S3's as he's out of space in his new domestic configuration.

He wants R10k for the lot - R4k for the Marantz pair and R6k for the speakers.

From what I've seen here the price of the speakers is fair but I'm unsure of the rest.

The issue of budget also comes into play: if I can get a decent price for the Tannoy set and a pair of very average disco/PA speakers (don't ask - is a long story...) I could manage to afford the B&Ws.

Has anyone got any experience with the HK/B&W pairing and care to comment? Or should I try to ditch my amp and snag the Marantz set as well? That would probably involve selling the centre channel but I mainly use the system for music anyway so it wouldn't be the end of the world if it's worth it in the end.

I love the way my current setup sounds but could do with a bit more bite on the top end and a lot more precision and grunt on the bottom (something I know the B&Ws will give me)

In his configuration the Marantz/B&W combo sounded a bit clinical and lacking in warmth for my taste but it's been a while since I've really had a chance to audition that system and I don't trust my memory that implicitly...

I am unsure about the amp pairing though and he's unwilling to lend me the equip to try out different combos (his 602s were stolen while being lent to a friend - with no insurance :( )

Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated!
