Hi everyone,

I recently invested in a new home theater setup, spending R40k on a TV and R60k on a sound system, including the Onkyo RZ50 receiver. However, I've run into significant issues that make the setup unusable for its intended purpose.

Issue Summary:

  • White Snow Screen: When using the Onkyo RZ50 as the input source, I only see a white snow screen on my Hisense U7K TV.
  • Temporary Fix: I switched my TV HDMI input to HDMI Standard, which resolved the white snow issue but it disables 4K support.
  • PS5 Compatibility: The PS5 connected through the AVR does not support HDR or Dolby Atmos, and the AVR only outputs stereo sound.
  • PS5 Compatibility: The PS5 connected to the TV directly does the HDMI handshake fine. 4k, 144hz with dolby atmos output.
  • HDMI Enhanced Mode: Research indicated that HDMI Enhanced or HDMI Enhanced 144Hz is necessary for HDR and Dolby Atmos. However, enabling HDMI Enhanced mode leads to HDCP handshake failures, making it unusable.
  • Signal Issues: Without HDMI Enhanced mode, I cannot get an ATMOS setup or even standard audio from the PS5. The signal fails to pass from the TV to the AVR, even when the PS5 is set to Stereo only.

Attempts to Resolve:

  • 8k HDMI cables: Purchased 8k HDMI cables.
  • Research: Found that many users face the same HDCP handshake issue with HDMI Enhanced mode.
  • Power Cycle order: Tried various combinations of turning devices on in order. Completely disconnected PS5.
  • Firmware upgrades: TV, PS5 and Onkyo has been updated to the latest firmware.

Seeking Advice:

  • Solutions for HDCP Handshake Failures: Any suggestions on resolving HDCP handshake failures when using HDMI Enhanced mode?
  • Alternative Configurations: Are there any alternative configurations that might allow HDR and Dolby Atmos without these issues?
  • Additional Tips: Any additional tips or settings I might be missing that could resolve these problems?
Your help is greatly appreciated as I am currently unable to use my expensive setup for its intended purpose. Thanks in advance!
