So I had a pair of Manley amps....missing HV transformers and few little ones. What I DO have is a chassis, 24 valves and PC board....
Hence the DIY build of a Manley Reference 600+. I want to upgrade and improve every possible part of the amp.
I would LOVE and APPRECIATE any info, suggestions as I build up the amp. From Inrush limiters, caps, etc etc. Ill start with PSU and move over to amp itself.
That is if people are curious. Please know my valve knowledge is very limited. Im not even sure which pin is whick on the valves.
It IS dangerous, I was out flat for 10 minutes after 700V discharged through me (2 x 15000uF 450V caps)... so this SCARES me, no shi..t. :-\ :nutter: :be: :be:
I have:
1. 6V 40A supply for heaters.
Want to be futureproof. KT150 = 12x2A = 24A
Possible KT200 (rumours) 32A
Q: It feeds AC to the heaters. This the norm ? If I make it DC I might be out of the range for the heater voltage.
Q: Any advantage AC vs DC ?
Q: Wire thickness ? The transformet has flat plates for wires, the socket has 6 x 1mm diameter wires.... feels too small ? Maybe take 6V seperately up to amp ?
2. New 470V HT supply and new 400V for Input Valves
Slightly higher to cater for KT120/150
The 470V goes through 1000V 50A bridge.
Q: Maybe use 4 a 1kV 10A Diodes rather ?
Q: How perfect must HT supply be ? More complicated LC filter circuit ?
Q: 3300uF 450V caps in series currently used. Any advantage using 4x1000uF or 6x1000uF ? Larger ESR ? Add coil ?
Q: I have 2x15000uF 450V handy - It felt as if amp with these in has deeper bass, tighter and stronger...this possible ?
