What pricing guidelines do you use to build a component system? I.e. which component do you spend the most money on or which do you spend the least on?

I know there is no right/wrong answer but I'm curious to know your opinions on the order in which you prioritize.

My recent change to seperates made me first acquire a decent pre-amp because they seem to be priciest & not as freely available component, compared to components like cd players & power amps.

Another way to ask this is, "which single component in your system makes the biggest difference in your chain?"
