The first speaker that really impressed me was the Mission 760i, nothing amazing to look at or high up in their range but really coherent sounding, and I was only driving them with a little Technics Micro system.
Previous to that I had B&W 603's I think it was, they were great but didn't really do much for me, driven by a nice Denon integrated.
The Mission 760i spec sheet also doesn't seem terribly impressive:
