How many subwoofers are ideal?

I started wondering ??
1) At what number of subs does adding an additional sub have no further benefit?
2) How dependent is this on room acoustic treatments?

3) Is it more sound beneficial and cost effective to buy one good sub for about R60,000 as opposed to spending the same amount of funds on say 4 older used subs at R15,000 each?
4) Will the answers be different if the stereo high-end system were to be for a high-end home theatre system?
