How to get a SA passport painlessly?

Doe anyone know how to get a SA passport painlessly? The best way at our local home affairs, I have been told is to arrive at 06h00 and wait. What do I take with these days. 1 - Old passport 2 - ID book 3 - Cash. Anything else? Been told don't take your own photo's they do it there. Is this true?

Anything to save me standing outside at 06h00 in winter would be appreciated!
