How does one know the real performance of a preamplifier, power amplifier or any type of audio equipment?
One of the best test methods is to use an audio spectrum analyser in order to conduct spectral analysis of an audio signal.
A couple of days ago I was fortunate to obtain a Hewlett Packard/Agilent HP 3582A Spectrum Analyser to test audio amplifiers with. Its frequency span is from less than 1Hz to 25KHz. Some of its main specifications:

This dual channel spectrum analyser has lots of other applications for e.g. measuring noise in helicopter gearboxes, loudspeaker testing, etc.
I started to use it to check the spectral purity of an audio generator. I have not yet started to check pre-amplifiers and power amplifiers with it.
