In Ceiling speakers

I need some help and would like to know if anyone has experienced listening to in-ceiling speakers in a home theatre setup?  The wife does not like speakers on the wall and I want a stereo setup as well so you have to give a little to get a whole lot more!  The problem is when walking into a demo room, they have the speakers installed but not hooked up so how do they sound?
