I last built a current spec PC around 6 years back and for the last few months neither of my pc's has been operative due to renovations, and frankly the only time I've missed them is when I've needed to do CPU intensive stuff. Now my work laptop is an i5 chipset and to me seems slower than my older pc's (could be windows tax?), so I'm wondering whether it's worth assembling a new PC in performance terms - will I see a huge improvement in CPU intensive tasks such as FLAC encoding, movie transcoding and acoustic analysis, especially where the software used for these tasks don't take advantage of the GPU? If not, day to day stuff can be handled via a tablet and laptop and my museum pieces will suffice.
