Jerky Turntable

Hey All

I got a Akai direct drive ap206c turntable. quite a cute looking tt.

Problem is it turns in a jerky motion, it is evident when listening to a LP, or when looking at the dots on the side of the platter. I think someone once mentioned oil and muck in direct drives motors? Could it possibly be electronics, like an ic?
