Around 1980, (I was still tiny) I was taken to visit some hydroelectric construction projects on the SA/Lesotho border. The explanation given to me was that they were building dams both high in the hills, and low down, so that water could be pumped up to the top dam when electrical capacity was over requirements, and then it used as a hydroelectric generation plant when the grid was under severe load. I saw the dams - partly filled and under construction, so it wasn't a myth!
What happened to that? Does it still work? Did it ever work?
And what happend to Cabora Bassa and the amazing (at the time) DC transmission line to SA?
