My Marantz SA14 S1 Special Edition arrived last week from Japan. I managed to get it before the latest price increase and with a 15% discount.

It's built like a Japanese watch and weighs 15.5 kg!

The remote control is well made from an aluminium extrusion.

The Special Edition model is a Kenny Ishiwata designed version with numerous improvements to components to improve the sound over the S1 model. It also has a thicker top plate, copper plating heat sinks, and heavier vibration damping feet.

I am still running it in but first impressions are wow! Super quiet noise floor with impeccable timing. It really shines with better CD's but isn't overly harsh with older recordings. Bass is huge and tight. It has a sweetness in the treble that keeps music from sounding fatiguing.

Coming from a 20 year old Proceed DAP/CDD combo (soon to be sold) shows you how technology has changed.

The ability to play DSD files from your computer is a huge plus.

Rest of the system is B&W 803N and Anthem 225 integrated.

The Anthem 225 is the weak link as even with 225 watts, it doesn't have the grip that the 803's need.
