If an album is available as a CD and/ or DVD (not talking DVD Audio) I always check to see whether the DVD has a PCM stream. If it does I rip that rather than purchase the CD. Two advantages: 1) the DVD stream often has a higher resolution and sample rate , and 2) somehow, the DVD PCM stream often seems to have escaped the effects of loudness wars, or at least not be as brickwalled as the CDs tend to be.
