Yesterday I managed to play the modified Rega I purchased and compared it to my Micro BL51.Both have identical Sumiko Blue Point 2 cartridges.Micro runs a Rega RB301 arm wired with Cardas interconnects in a continuous run plus a Moth counterweight. The Rega uses the 300 arm as advertised by Rudi with a acrylic platter and Origin Live counterweight.
The 1st thing I noticed was there was no arm lift attached to the headshell.
I played 3 different imported albums which although old I have owned since new.
Album 1 was On a threshhold of a dream-Moody Blues
Album 2 On the Sunnyside of the street -Ella and Count Basie
Album 3 Diamonds and Rust-Joan Baez
All 3 albums were cleaned using the RCM
The Rega was good very good.I noticed that the 300 arm did not dampen as well at the start of the album as did 301 arm. Also surface noise was more pronounced on the 300 arm compared to the 301 arm.(this could be due to the age of the cartridge).Sound was not as smooth as the 301 arm either.
I did not have time to put the original glass platter on and use the Achromat to see if it made a difference. However as Rudi quoted in another post the MS would sound better and to me it does. But the Rega was an excellent buy for R4500.00.Now the question do I keep the Rega or resell it to help fund new speakers?
