I often find that some centre channel speakers don?t adequately ?project? their sound as well as the main left/right speakers. I suppose this could be due to factors such as positioning or differences in the sonic character of the centre channel speaker when compared to the left & right channel speakers.  I?ve been thinking about the benefits of using two or more speakers for the centre channel in a home theatre setup to counter this.

By multiple centre channel speakers I mean using two identical bookshelf/floorstanding speakers and placing them on either sides of the screen, at the same height as the main speakers.  Alternatively two traditional, horizontally placed centre channel speakers can also be placed above and below the screen. The two speakers could be powered independently, or powered from a single amplifier channel and wired in parallel/series.

I did a bit of reading on this and it seems the general view is that going the multiple centre channel route is a no no, for reasons I don?t quite understand. Oddly, I recall reading somewhere that using multiple speakers for all/some of the channels is common place in commercial movie theatre setups.

What are the technical reasons for why using two (or more) loudspeakers for the centre channel is not a good idea, if this is indeed the case? Has anyone ever tried this?
