My Brother in law is looking at a 2-way Bass Reflex (could do sealed) standmount, or slim floorstander build. He?d like to pitch in to the group buy and I'm not au-fait with the actual abilities of the new drivers... specs look nice, but I won't KNOW.

The room is a lively (tiled), fairly large living room 4x8m open plan to smaller kitchen - will get some rugs in the near future - I'll work in some wall hangings too, flutter is bad.
He is not a bass freak, or loud freak - don't think he will ever be listening at general audiophile reference levels. (suppose that may change once the distortion gets less ;-) ) my sealed mdf 9 liter boksie with Kef Coda 7 drivers are still impressive enough, in my lounge (similar size, more absorbtion).
And besides I think a sub build at a later stage is a better bet than an over enthusiastic three-way build.
Music taste, i actually haven't a clue, likes most things (jazz blues acoustic rock) I play well enough.
He wants something a bit more worthy of the investment in time (i.e. cabinet)... so the 20USD peerless 5?/6? and 13USD Vifa tweet won?t do, although I appreciate they can sound very good. He will buy an entry-level ish integrated amp with a dvdp as source and ipod dock i'm sure.

My thinking is that the good sound quality value lies around a 5.5-6.5? driver and 1? tweeter combo with an easy cross-over?  second order or less, which is perhaps why they are so common. But that may just be because difficult XO's are beyond me... So more cost for the drivers, less hassle for the XO...

So does anybody have any experience with the below-mentioned drivers?
Is my thinking about prioritising a "relaxed" cross-over region fair in the modern times?
There's the advantage of easier / less BSC correction for the 6.5" (don't have to pad down the tweeter that much... and slightly easier tweeter integration for the 6.5", but more padding the tweeter down. Coupled to that that I kinda like the voicing of a good 6" mid, but the detail from a 5" is generally speaking better...
But maybe there is a sweet spot in the below drivers somewhere...

So currently the drivers that seem reasonably easy to work with are:
5-6"

or 6-7""

With one of these for the tweeters.

I'm thinking the 5.5 or 6.5 glass fibre Scanspeak (with a slight preference for the 6.5/7) with the SEAS tweeter looks like the best compromise at the moment... What do you think...

Anybody have similar easy drivers kicking about that needs a new home, for not too much Moola, nudge nudge Stu or Ian ;-)
