New PC 5/6k - what to buy?

I've completely lost touch with current PC architecture and a friend has asked for some advice re getting a new PC for business and pleasure.  He's no gamer, basically uses the PC for spreadsheets, invoicing and email.  He's also likely to rip CDs, DVDs etc. for his media server.  I'm very comfortable building from components, so I guess the question is what chipset and brand mobo should he be going for to get best bang for buck and quality/ reliability?

Mac is not part of the equation...
