A Thorens TD-280 turntable came in here with an alleged speed problem. I haven't done anything to it apart from plugging its generic wallwart into the mains and noticed it runs slow on both 33.3rpm and 45rpm.
Its original power supply was absent but it was delivered with an Ellies item rated at 12Vdc 1000mA.
On the back of the plinth it has a sticker which is marked 16Vdc 150mA.
There is also another jobcard sticker on the plinth, bearing the name of a certain electronics repair shop.
The turntable was brought here by another gent who informed me he was an electronics tech and that the Ellies 12V p/supply was up to snuff for 33.3rpm but slow and slow in starting at 45rpm.
He also mentioned checking sine waves and all kinds of other complicated stuff but couldn't find anything wrong.
I checked the belt which is clean and new and has the correct deflection. Lubricant also appears to be OK and must be the original but still serviceable.
I am of the opinion that there's no way this equipment is going to run to speed with a 12V power supply instead of the specified 16V and that I will be wasting my time in flushing the bearing and talcing a new clean belt.
What say you?
Thanks in advance for your expert opinions.
