Looking for some help and advice on rebuilding a pair of speakers.
I have a pair of Polk SRT speakers that need some serious attention, I really want to get them up and running but the problem is that there are no new spare parts. One can purchase second hand drivers on eBay but I am having second thoughts as there is the risk of having to repair or replace surrounds, different drivers not matching up and at the end of the day they will be old drivers with the risk of having to replace again.
So my thinking was to possibly try upgrade them and make them unique, some folk might frown at the idea but from my perspective, if there are limited spares and at some point in the future there will be zero spares, why not.
Current condition: cabs are in fair condition, could do with a sand and spray, all 16 drivers need new surrounds, eight voice coils need to be replaced, literally broken off or compressed. I don?t have the controller that managers the bass as well as splitting the channels left, left right and right, right left. Interesting concept of increasing the sound stage by playing left and right channels both sides. The two bass units are functioning, Rick repaired the one 300w plate amp. They do hum slightly which frustrates me.
The plan. Find a replacement drop in driver, possibly replace the plate amps and then use a mini dsp to control the system and then address the cabs.
The other option would be a straight forward line array setup, no fancy channel splitting.
I realize this is going to cost a few pennies and hens why I need to get this right.
I am open to lots of input, driver selection, wiring options, plate amp options etc.
Current drivers are Polk Audio MW5805, size 5.25?
The current tweeters are still working.
Will post some pics shortly.
