I bought this Pioneer amplifier from a guy over the internet. The only pictures
he send me was from the front of the amp so I couldn't see the veneer. When I
got it I saw that the veneer on the chassis was painted with black paint.
So if you ever wondered how to remove paint from veneer. Here's how-
I had two choices either sanding the paint off or using paint stripper.
I decided to use paint stripper because the veneer is really very thin.
The type of paint stripper I chose was one that looks like a type of gel.
The liquid type wont work well on the vertical chassis sides.
Its very easy to apply. You just use a paint brush and apply and let it
sit for 20 minutes. Just be very careful with the veneer and do not use a
scraper to remove the lifted paint use an old rag and water.
Use rubber gloves when working with paint stripper as it may burn your skin.
After the paint was removed I cleaned the chassis with a cleangreen and water
solution I use in a spraybotlle. I then dry the veneer and sand very lightly
with 1000 grid. I cant stress this enough veneer is very thin and i have leanrned
that it splinters if you sand to roughly.
The metal backplate was easier than the veneer. The paint lifted easier and here
it is ready to be sanded and polished.
To finnish the raw veneer I opted for a natural look as it appeals more to
me than varnish. I use boiled linseed oil applied with a brush and then rubbed in with
an old tshirt. I apply 3 coats to make sure it draws into the wood nicely.
After a day I apply liquid furniture wax.
If you look closely you will see that some of the black paint went into the
grain of the veneer but for me it worked out better as it brings out the grain more.
I did not work on the faceplate that much. I just wiped it with some medicinal alcohol
and I just removed all the buttons and cleaned with my clean green solution. I
will remove and polish the plate at a later stage.
So here is a quick before and after-
