Personally never had any luck with a preamplifier in the mix and man I've tried! That was until Marius came to visit and said, "Alan you need a valve preamplifier." So I did and Walla! It worked a charm, gave the tops more air and blended cones with horns perfectly. It was a seriously good match! BUT then enter a valve amplifier and it goes back to how I remember the others, pre slowing things down with less detail almost just getting in the road! I almost always find DAC directly into amp works best. What do you prefer as the volume control?
