Preparing Window Frame For Varnish

I have the standard Window frames and patio door wooden surrounds. The varnish is old and I want to remove some and revarnish.
I have bought an orbital sander and heat gun.
Is this what i need to undertaken this job ? Question is how do I use the orbital sander after softening with the heat gun and I presume I can't use the sand direct on the old varnish.
