When both your wife and 90 year old mother say that they no longer know what to give you for your birthday ,so here is money for your hi -fi and everyone else you know gives you a bottle of red wine ,you know that you have become a little one dimensional and infinitely boring.
So to make my wife roll her eyes even more I bought a tonearm cable, ambisonic microphones/earphones and a piece of Schiit.
I started my hifi life not with ubiquitous Blaupunkt ,Pioneer Rondo or Telefunken but rather with a tape recorder and Sennheisers. Trust me to be in fashion but 30 years out of time.I eventually progressed to a very serious vinyl setup and valve preamp and no speakers. Those Sennheisers persisted as my sole way of listening for long after they should have but when they left,I was done with headphones for ever.
I have a Focusrite Scarlet interface and eventually added a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s for YouTube and I thought it was ok but kept thinking a dac/headphone amp one day? maybe.
So clutching my birthday money I went looking. I needed a dac /headphone amp but also something that can run my little Yamaha desktop monitors in balanced mode. So Schiit? I was a little reluctant but it seemed a Jotunheim with dac would do more or less what I want .
I ordered one. During the waiting Schiit anounced a new option of a multibit board in the Jotunheim and offered me this for an extra $ 100. I accepted but with all this to and fro ,what arrived was wat I initially ordered and not the upgrade.
Schiit was apologetic and asked that I return and they would send the proper Jotunheim with Multibit Dac and refund shipping. Pretty decent of them . I have no problem importing even if US customs once withheld an order till I supplied proof that I was not shifting Weapons on mass destruction. But exporting.? Oh no.Never again!
Oh well, I?ll just accept it and eat the $100. Except I really disliked the Jotunheim as it was and it was not what I ordered. Fedex wanted R3000 for the return .Scott?s shipping quoted R700 .My wife persuaded me and within less than 24 hours Scott?s had it whipped away. There was one phone call?s worth of trouble with Customs and off it went.Painless and the easiest I ever had anything remotely to do with shipping. Bravo Scott! Proof of shipment to Schiit and less than a week later Jotunheim with multibit dac was in my hands and the refunded $ 50 in my pocket
And it sounds astonishing! It is simply in another class from the Jotunheim /balanced dac. Considering the price difference is less than it cost to have a septic tank emptied and sure smells far better. Good Schiit.
I may just be spending a lot more time with headphones and Tidal than I ever thought !
Thumbs up to Scott?s Shipping and Schiit.
