Along the beatles line of HELP! I need somebody HELP... won't you please please help meeee...

I am trying to create an effective workspace in the garage, for everything... first question:
I carefully set-up my Quantum B16F (bought in 2004) only got round to setting it up now it is of semi-amazing construction, wish I opened it then to see the crack in the only plastic part of the casing... and after spending an hour placing and levelling the stand... I noticed that the one thing I eyeballed, was perhaps a flaw... so need to move it, as that bench is too narrow...

But the main question is... it has this tapering spindle thingy that connects the chuck, oh what a chuck... there is absolutely NO Play...

But there's nothing but the taper that holds it up, and that sounds a bit odd... It hasn't dropped out yet, haven't used it, and the taper into the drill at the top, well basically I can't get it out anymore... so it is probably fine, and uses a friction fit... but can it be??!!?!? would hate to have that jump out while pulling it out of a piece of metal...

So Some kind words, that this chuck is not a disaster, will be greatly appreciated...
