Soft Start Relay

So any insight would be helpful.
My current pressure pumps for water have a very large start up draw of current.
This was measured and the suggestion was to replace the pumps with a VSD(Variable Speed Drive) pump(s).
These are significantly more expensive.
The other option would perhaps be to install a soft start relay? This i was reading myself.
Any experience with this? or insights?
